| Fast growing evergreen tree, found in California, up the coast to southern Oregon. Mature height is
200', design height is 75'. Needles are 1/2 to 3/4" long, dark green, entire and linear. Cone is much smaller than that of
the Sequoiadendron giganteum - it's the size of a thumb (1/2 to 1 1/2").
Prefers full sun to part shade, high to moderate water, likes loam, sand and clay. Little maintenance required. Propagate by cuttings and seeds. Little pruning required, keep central leader, remove suckers. Use as background, container, grove, specimen tree, bonsai. Can, like the Metasequoia glyptostroboides, be used as a soft hedge, kept low. Cultivars include 'Aptos Blue', 'Santa Cruz' and 'Los Altos'. Photos taken at College of Marin. We've also seen it at Strybing. |
