  Fast growing evergreen tree, found in California, up the coast to southern Oregon. Mature height is 200', design height is 75'. Needles are 1/2 to 3/4" long, dark green, entire and linear. Cone is much smaller than that of the Sequoiadendron giganteum - it's the size of a thumb (1/2 to 1 1/2"). Prefers full sun to part shade, high to moderate water, likes loam, sand and clay.

Little maintenance required. Propagate by cuttings and seeds. Little pruning required, keep central leader, remove suckers.

Use as background, container, grove, specimen tree, bonsai. Can, like the Metasequoia
glyptostroboides
, be used as a soft hedge, kept low. Cultivars include 'Aptos Blue', 'Santa Cruz' and 'Los Altos'.
