| From Asia (Japan). Prevalent throughout US. Slow to moderate growth dense and twiggy deciduous shrub. Simple leaves, alternately arranged,
2 to 3" long and 1 to 2" wide, dark green serrated and elliptic, ovate. Simple red/salmon 1 to 2" flowers, blooming in January and
February and intermittently in March, November and December. Fruit: Pome, up to 2 1/2" diameter, showy greenish yellow in summer/fall. Prefers full sun, high to moderate water, loamy soil. Tolerates drought, heat and poor soil. Capable of thriving in all climates. Propagate from seeds, budding, layering and cuttings. Easily repotted. Prune after blooming when dormant, thin, remove suckers. Uses: Barrier, bonsai, cut flowers, espalier, clipped or informal hedge, massing/bedding, ground cover, against a wall, in Japanese garden.
