"Acerifolia" = "looks like a maple". Deciduous tree, reaching up to 100'.
Platanus is the only genus in the Platanaceae family; there are only six species in the genus.
Alternately arranged (maples, though, are oppositely arranged). Bark and seeds are also different between the London Plane Tree and maples. Very hard wood, messy.
These are pollarded. Reasons for pollarding: to control height (these would normally be about 60'); coppicing, and to keep fruit at ladder reach.
