Pittosporum tobira & cvs.  Mock Orange Pittosporaceae

From Japan. Moderately to fast growth evergreen tree or shrub. Design height is 6', mature height is 15'. Simple leaves, alternate/ closely whorled arrangement, 2 to 5" long, 1 to 1 1/2" wide, dark green. Entire and obovate. White 3/4" flowers, blooming in March and April. Green to brown capsule fruits, 3/4" in 4 to 6" clusters.

Low maintenance. Prefers full sun to shade, moderate to light water. Likes loam, rocky and sandy soil. Tolerates drought, heat, poor soil, salt air and wind. Propagate from seeds and cuttings. Little pruning required, but tolerates clipping. Variegated cultivar is notorious for reverting back to unvariegated parentage.

Good as a container plant, for erosion control, as a clipped or informal hedge. Can be grown indoors. Also good for massing, bedding, as a screen, windbreak. Also is often pruned as a tree. Good on coast.

'Variegata' (in photos) grows to about 5', pale gray green and edged with white. Photos above from Gamble Garden.
