  Pittosporum tenuifolium   Pittosporum tenuifolium

  "Pittosporum" means "sticky seed". "Tenuifolium" means "thin leaves". Fast-growing evergreen shrub from New Zealand. Design height is 10', mature height 30'. Simple leaves, alternately arranged. 1 to 3" long, 3/4 to 1" wide, light green to gray-green, undulate and ovate margins, obovate/oblong shape. Characteristic dark purple to black small flowers (1/4 to 1/2"), blooms in May. Poisonous capsule fruits, brown, in fall. Prefers full sun, moderate to no water, loam and sand. Tolerates drought, heat, poor soil, salt air and wind. Resists smog and dust. Tolerates clipping. Not deer proof.

Use as background, as a clipped or informal hedge, screen or windbreak. Good on coast, low maintenance.
