Evergreen tree, design height is 60' mature height is 100'. Very fast growth.
Needles are 3 to 6" long, medium to dark green. Mostly has three needles per pannicle, as opposed to P. contorta's two, and P. torreyana's five. Needle length is longer than on P. contorta, and has a much larger cone (3 to 6", green/brown). Endangered in California due to development. Prefers full sun, high to light water, likes loam and sand. Tolerates drought, heat, poor soil, salt air and wind.
Monterey Pines vs. Monterey Cypresses: Pinus radiata has a more whorled branching arrangement
than Cupressus macrocarpa. Pinus radiata has larger cones, light foliage than C. macrocarpa.
Prune November through February, keep central leader and never cut back into old wood. Good for erosion control, screen, grove tree,
windbreak. Requires little maintenance. |
