From Asia (China/Japan/Himalayas). Slow to moderate-growth evergreen shrub (can be trained as small tree). Design height is 3', mature height is 6 to 8'. Simple prominently net-veined leaves, alternately arranged, 1 to 2" long, 1" wide, medium to dark green, entire and ovate-elliptic. Beautiful new / old growth contrast. White to greenish flowers, 3/4 to 1", blooms in February and March and intermittently in April. Simple, terminal clusters. Also has varieties that bloom purple ('Razzleberry'), and some with reddish leaves.

Like part sun, moderate water, loamy soil. Needs afternoon protection. Good in understory. Little pruning required. Good as a container plant, can be espaliered. Ground cover, hanging basket, massing/bedding, specimen tree, good foreground plant, foundation border. Deer proof.
