| From Central China. Slow growing deciduous vine/groundcover. Mature height can be 20', indefinite spread. Scarlet to dark green leaves with purple undersides, 1 1/2" to 3" long, toothed and ovate. White to greenish flowers, insignificant. Dark blue berries. Prefers partial sun, regular water, rich soils. Tolerates a fair amount of shade. Subject to powdery mildew and leaf spots. Propagate by cuttings and seed. Uses: delicate covering of walls and fences (but watch your fences). Unusual leaf coloring that lends a softening and elegant touch. Photo taken at Filoli. |
