From Asia. Moderate growth deciduous shrub, 2' design height and 6 to 8' design spread. Mature height is 3' with mature spread at 15'. 1/2" medium green simple leaves, alternately arranged and entire and round. Simple pink and white 1/2" flowers, in April and May but sometimes in March and June. 5-petaled open flowers typical of Rosaceae family. 1/2" red/orange berries in fall and winter.

Hardiness: -30 degrees Fahrenheit. Prefers full sun, dry to light water, loam and sandy soil. Tolerates drought, heat, poor soil and wind. Subject to fireblight, mites, crown and rootrot in clay soils. Propagate by cutting, layering and seed. Little pruning required, will stump sprout. Unattractive when branches are cut short.

Uses: as bonsai, for erosion control, espalier, filler, ground cover, bank cover, as a lower traffic barrier. Is low maintenance. NOTE: will tend to grow downhill, so don't plant it partway down a slope and expect it to grow both up and down.
