  Punica granatum   Punica granatum

  From South Asia. Name means "many footed pomegranite". Slow to moderate growth deciduous shrub, dense and twiggy. Design height and spread 10'; mature height and spread 20'. Simple oppositely arranged green and glossy 2 to 3" leaves, entire and oblong-lanceolate. 1 1/2" red-orange flowers, in summer. Red, rusty and globose (?) 3 to 6" berries, in fall and winter.

Water in summer, likes fertile, good soil. Tolerates drought, alkaline PH in soil. Subject to scale, grey mold, and dies back. Prune to shape (fruits on new wood).

Use in a container, as a hedge, specimen or tree.
