From China and Taiwan. Slow growing deciduous tree, to 15' design height and 20 to 30' mature height. Design and mature spread are 10'. Oppositely arranged 2 to 4" long leaves, deep yellow fall color. Entire and elliptic.
White and fringe-like 4" long flowers in June and July. Tree may take 10 years to flower. Blue-black 1/2" fruit (female produces olive-like dark fruits). Prefers full sun or sheltered. Likes long hot summers, well drained and fertile soil. Few pests or problems.
Seed in fall. Flowers on previous year's growth, needs little pruning, do so in late winter or early spring.
Use as a specimen tree, shrub border, can be used both as a shrub or small tree. |
