Native to Japan and China. Slow to moderate growth evergreen. Design height is 12" (inches), mature height is 18". Design spread is 18", mature spread 24". Simple 18" leaves, dark green, entire and linear. Spiked violet flowers in July and August. Black berries. Prefers part shade, high to moderate water, acid, neutral, loam and sandy soil. Tolerates lots of shade. Subject to snails and slugs which live in middle of plant. Propagate by division. Flowers should be cut off after blooming to improve appearance or prevent fruit set. Needs little pruning. Use in a rock garden, shade garden, or around a pond or pool. Can be grown in a container.
