From Mediterranean regions of Europe. Slow to moderate growth evergreen shrub or tree, to 15' design height and spread. Mature height up to 40', mature spread to 25'. Light green and glossy simple leaves, alternately arranged, 2 to 4" long and 1 to 2" wide. Entire. 2" yellow flowers in April and May. 1/2" purple/black berries in summer and fall.
Hardiness: 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Prefers partial shade, adaptable to all amounts of water. Likes all soil types. Tolerates wind, heat, poor soil and salt air. Subject to thrips and scale. Propagate by grafting, budding and seed. Is multi-trunked.
Landscape uses: As a shade tree, street tree, patio tree, clipped or unclipped hedge, container plant, or topiary.
