    Hydrangea macrophylla

  From Asia (Japan). Moderate to fast growing deciduous shrub. Design height and spread are 5', mature height and spread are 10'. Simple oppositely arranged, decussate (?) medium to light green and glabrous leaves, 5 to 8" long and 3 to 6" wide. Coarsely serrate and elliptic, ovate. Really brilliant yellow fall color. Showy flowers: cyme. Blue-pink Calyx 1", from July and into November. Aluminum sulfate added or in soil lend blue color to flowers.

Prefers part sun but tolerates full sun (leaves can burn though), high water, all soil types OK except rocky; subject to mites and powdery mildew. Propagate by cuttings. Cut off old flowers, prune really low when dormant. Do not prune new canes with terminal buds.

Uses: accent, in a containter (if watered frequently), massing/bedding, specimen. Lace-cap cultivars, many dwarf forms.
