From Europe. Slow to moderate growth deciduous tree. Design height is 40', mature height is 60'. Design spread is 30', mature height is 40'. Simple alternately arranged 2 to 4" long dark green and glossy leaves, serrate and ovate. Inconspicuous flowers, insignificant fruit.
Prefers full sun, high to moderate water, loam; subject to wooly beech aphid and mites. Propagate by seed. Little pruning required, keep central leader, tolerates clipping.
Use as bonsai, in a container, as a clipped hedge, specimen, lawn or shade tree, requires little maintenance. 'Tricolor' is a beautiful cultivar with green and white leaves edged with pink. 'Athropunicea' (spelling?) aka Copper Beech is reddish/purple.
