  Diospyros kaki 'Hachiya'   Diospyros kaki 'Hachiya'

  From Asia. Moderate growth deciduous tree, design height and spread are 20', mature height and spread are 40'. Simple alternately arranged dark green or light green and glabrous leaves, 3 to 7" long and 3 to 4" wide. Entire and ovate. Yellow 1/4" flowers in April. Orange 3-5" fruit in fall and winter (berries). Nice plated bark.

Prefers full sun, high to light water, loam and sandy soil. Tolerates drought and poor soil. Subject to Verticillium.

Propagate by cuttings and seed. Little pruning required, thin as desired. Uses: accent, bird attractor, container, for edible fruit, espalier, oriental effect or with Spanish architecture, specimen, garden/patio/shade tree.

Many cultivars and hybrids have been produced with different fruit characteristics: 'Chocolate', 'Fuyu', 'Hachiya' (shown in images), and 'Tamopan' are examples.
