| From South America. Design height is 15-25'; mature height is 30. Slow growth evergreen tree. Oppositely arranged entire and elliptic leaves, dark green with bronzy new growth, up to 7". White to yellow 1/8" flowers in panicles, in June and July. Fall to winter fruit on female plants (dioeceous), rose to red with a green immature stage, 1/8" drupe. Prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade, high light water. Acid, neutral, clay, loam, sandy and rocky soils. Tolerates drought, poor soil, salt air and wind. Susceptible to verticilium wilt. Propagate by seed and cuttings. Prune by thinning. Use as a container plant, lawn tree, patio tree, shade tree or street tree. The specimen in these photos isn't very healthy; usually, the tree is very lush and full. |
