Spreading evergreen, to 70', with scaly whitish-gray or red-tinged bark. Many habitats, mostly found in California (native to CA). Spiny, leathery, dark green leaves, to 2 1/2" long. Leaf will help us tell it apart from Q. agrifolia:
Q. chrysolepis has ashy/bluish underside to leaf, Q. agrifolia is green underneath. Q. chrysolepis' leaves have more
parallel veination, while Q. agrifolia's leaves have net-like veins. Q. chysolepis acorns have golden scales, and top
is more turban-like; cap on Q. agrifolia acorn is very tight and flatter.
