Arctostaphylos manzanita is native to California. Slow to moderate growth evergreen shrub.
Design height is 10', mature height 20'. Simple leaves, alternately arranged, 3/4 to 1 1/2" long. Medium green or gray-green, entire and ovate.Color of bark is characteristic of family, along with bell-shaped flowers (Rhododendrons are an exception). Pink 1/4" flowers in drooping panicles, blooms
February-April. Red 1/4" berries in summer/fall. Can be messy in a hardscape.
Prefers full sun, light to no water, loam. Tolerates drought, poor soil and heat. Propagates by seeding and cutting.
Good multi-trunked shrub, little pruning required, OK to thin. Uses: Cut foliage, outdoor lighting (?), specimen.
