  Arbutus 'Marina'   Arbutus 'Marina'

  Moderate growth evergreen tree. Design height is 25', mature height is 40'. Simple serrate leaves, alternately arranged (entire family has alternate arrangement). Rosy pink bell-shaped flowers, blooming in fall and early winter. Bell-shaped flowers are characteristic of Ericaceae, with exception of Rhododendrons. 1 1/2" red/yellow fruit in winter. Color of bark is characteristic of family.

Prefers full sun, little to regular water, likes slightly acid, slightly alkaline, well-drained soil. Propagate by cuttings. OK to prune.

A. 'Marina' vs. A. menziesii: A. 'Marina' leaves are more toothed, A. menziesii has more of a pink tinge to bark. 'Marina' taller. A 'Marina' flowers pinker.

Uses: container, around lawn in a courtyard, raised bed, specimen, native garden. Can be messy in a hardscape.

Genus Arbutus has about 14 species of evergreen trees and shrubs. Ericaceae also contains heathers, manzanita, huckleberry, cranberries, blueberries, etc.
